Restaurant review: Comorin – Chef Manish Mehrotra’s new venture

Chef Manish Mehrotra – the name is enough to make you head to this restaurant without blinking an eyelid to see what he has conjured up this time. After eating so many times at Indian Accent, I for sure was looking forward to it.

Interiors of Comorin

Comorin has a pan India menu where simple dishes are given that modern twist. Else you won’t expect khichdi and Cheeni malai toast to make it to the menu. The small plates are done very interestingly with unusual combinations. For example, Dahi Batata Puri comes with a hint of wasabi adding that zing to this popular dish. The super soft gunpowder idly has three chutneys – mint, coconut and tomato, and they not only taste good but arrive beautifully plated.

Sweet Corn Khichdi

Sweet Corn Khichdi

One dish that surprised me was Sweet Corn Khichdi. To be honest I dislike khichdi since this is what my mother would feed me when I wasn’t well, so to order it required some guts. But I must confess it was superb.  The sweet corn was topped with crunchy sem ke beej and khakra, which made it a perfect combination. Now my notion of khichdi has changed forever

Andhra Chicken

Andhra Gongura Chicken

If you love spicy food, then definitely order Andhra Gongura Chicken that is served with murukku. This crunchy South Indian snack cuts down the spiciness and it’s delicious. Another favourite was the super soft and creamy haleem which came accompanied by butter toast. Believe me, you’ll recall this wherever you have haleem next because it’s cooked to perfection.

Mutton Egg Bhurji

Mutton and egg bhurji

I particularly loved the mutton dishes - the mutton and egg bhurji that was served with hummas in the small plates section and the Bihari Champaran Mutton that was beautifully paired with Sattu paratha.

Malai Chini Toast

Malai Cheeni Toast

When it comes to desserts, the Malai Cheeni Toast is a no-brainer. Served on brioche, it is slathered with fresh super light malai, sugar crystals and honeycomb and comes with orange marmalade that perfectly balances the flavours.

I will not get talking of the cocktails and the coffee bar here because that deserves a separate post so stay tuned for it.
